Parliament Monsoon Session concludes amid disruptions
14-Aug-26   11:32 Hrs IST
Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned sine die on 13 August 2026, concluding the Monsoon Session after 19 sittings over 25 days, which began on 20 July 2026. During this session, a total of 12 Bills were passed, including significant laws such as the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, the Bankers' Books Evidence Bill, the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, the MSME Development (Amendment) Bill, the Tribunals Reforms Bill, the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, and the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill.

The Public Examinations Amendment Bill aims to enhance examination integrity with faster investigations and stricter penalties and has received presidential assent. The MSME Development Amendment Bill introduces a national digital platform for MSME registration and seeks to improve finance access and resolve delayed payments. The Bankers' Books Evidence Bill updates definitions regarding bank records. The Tribunals Reforms Bill focuses on enhancing tribunal independence and establishes a National Tribunals Commission. The Mines and Minerals Amendment Bill seeks to stabilize the fiscal framework in the mineral sector.

The session also included the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee. Disruptions marked the session, predominantly due to student protests related to the NEET paper leak and alleged police actions against protesters. Despite passing key legislation, both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha showed low productivity, with 19% and 39%, respectively. The government introduced 11 Bills in Lok Sabha and two in Rajya Sabha, while demands for Excess Grants for 2022-23 were addressed.
