The key domestic indices closed with gains. Nifty IT, Nifty FMCG and Nifty PSU Bank shares advanced.

As per provisional closing data, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, rose 879.09 points or 1.23% to 72,472.33. The Nifty 50 index gained 288.65 points or 1.30% to 22,520.45. In the past three trading sessions, the Nifty and Sensex eased by 1.12% and 0.81%, respectively.

The broader market lagged behind the frontline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index climbed 1.06% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index edged higher by 0.43%.

The market breadth was healthy. On the BSE, 3072 shares advanced and 2165 shares declined. A total of 218 shares were unchanged.

Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd was the top traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 315.37 lakh shares and registered a sharp decline of 20.63% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has risen sharply by around 3.76% in last one-month and has edged up 2.70% over last one year.

ITC Ltd was the second highest traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 310.31 lakh shares and recorded a sharp decline of 18.90% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has fallen sharply by around 3.23% in last one-month and has fallen sharply 36.21% over last one year.

Index action

The Nifty IT index rose sharply by 3.02% to 28574.9 today. The index has declined by 2.01% in last one week and has retreated 7.18% over last one month. It has declined sharply by 21.27% in last one year. Persistent Systems Ltd (up 5.52%), LTM Ltd (up 3.96%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (up 3.85%), HCL Technologies Ltd (up 3.38%) and Coforge Ltd (up 2.95%) gained.

The Nifty FMCG index moved up by 2.20% to 44864.25 today. The index is marginally higher by 0.25% in last one week and has posted modest losses of 4.05% over last one month. It dropped sharply by 19.44% in last one year. Colgate-Palmolive (India) Ltd (up 4.73%), ITC Ltd (up 4.31%), United Spirits Ltd (up 3.63%), Radico Khaitan Ltd (up 3.06%) and Dabur India Ltd (up 2.63%) traded higher.

Global Markets

European markets showed mild gains.

DOW futures are trading a little higher by 0.19% today.

MCX Crude oil futures are down 1.26% at Rs 8875.0 per barrel.

NIFTY50 futures closed higher by 1.49% at 22625 and are in a premium of 105 points compared to NIFTY50.
